They Say It’s Your Birthday

Today is my husband’s birthday. I won’t say which one, because I think we’re both getting to that point where we’d rather not think about how old we actually are. It’s also George Washington’s birthday. You know, our first president, the guy on the dollar bill.

I often joke to my husband that I’m glad his parents didn’t name him George. It’s just not one of my favorite boy names. Sparky Anderson’s parents, however, didn’t ask my opinion before naming him George (well, that would have been impossible, I’m not that old!).

Yep, Sparky was a Phillie during his brief playing career, and his birthday is today, too.

I decided to see who else’s birthday was on February 22. There is a nifty feature on that gives you a list of every major-league player born on a given day. Only two other Georges though – George Genovese, who played for the Washington Senators in 1950, and George Davies, who played for several teams from 1891-93.

Among the 51 players listed is the Mets’ new set-up man, J.J. Putz. Now there’s a name that seems like great fodder for jokes! 🙂 J.J. was the object of one of last season’s most unusual stadium giveaways, the J.J. Putz Soul Patch.

Everyone who attended the Mariners game on April 12, 2008 got to go home with their very own self-adhesive chin hair! These come up for sale on eBay every now and then, but I haven’t gotten one yet. I’m tempted to, just for it’s oddness quotient.

The most unusual name on the list has to be P*ssy (!) Tebeau, given name Charles Alston Tebeau. He appeared in a grand total of 2 games for the 1895 Cleveland Spiders. Let’s hope that his nickname was meant to imply that he had feline agility.

Phormer (almost) Phillie Update

Kris Benson has signed a minor-league deal with the Texas Rangers. Benson was signed by the Phillies last year to a minor-league deal after missing the 2007 season following surgery for a torn rotator cuff. After going 1-6 with a 5.78 ERA during stints with the Clearwater Threshers, Reading Phillies, and Lehigh Valley IronPigs, he was released last August. Here’s a photo of him pitching in Clearwater last June:

Julia – was Red Bird a Cardinal? That would be too perfect!
I see that somehow the system automatically removed the player’s name from my post. Well, I can tell you via email, or you can look up “Tebeau” on

Happy B-Day to your husband, Sue! As for the age thing? A reporter came to my house on Friday to do an interview about the book. He asked me how old I was. I said, “None of your business.” I told him to describe me as a Baby Boomer. Figured that would cover it.

Tell your husband that I say ‘Happy Birthday’! I didn’t know that Sparky Anderson’s real name was George. And did they really give away a JJ Putz soul patch? That’s the wackiest giveaway I’ve ever seen!

Julia, Jenn, Jane, and Elizabeth – my husband thanks you all for the birthday wishes!
Jeff – along with Kris comes Anna. You guys gotta like that, right? 🙂
