When I’m in need of a little levity, unusual names always amuse me. In fact, I’ve mentioned it before. So this morning I was reminded of this gem of a name from a few years ago:
Chad Chop! What a great baseball name! Even though the scoreboard says “outfielder”, he was playing first base on this night in 2005 for the Potomac Nationals, as they faced the Salem Avalanche in Salem, Virginia.
Apparently I didn’t take a picture of Chad, just his name on the scoreboard.
In trying to find out whatever became of Mr. Chop, it would seem that he never progressed past high-A in the Expos/Nationals system; the most recent information I could find showed him playing in an independent league in 2006.
If only he had been able to stick around a little longer, I’m sure he would have been a participant in the initial Minors Moniker Madness tournament in 2007.
The current tournament is nearing an end, but there is still time to vote! Get on over to http://mlb.mlb.com/minors/fan_forum/moniker_madness/bracket.jsp and cast your vote for either Dusty Napoleon or Beamer Weems.
My personal favorite, Brett Butts, was eliminated in the second round by Jose Jose. 😦
The Phillies are back in action later today, taking on the Colorado Rockies in the Rockies’ home opener. Cole Hamels will make his first start of the season for the Phils. Go Cole!
